Martin Luther King Jr.

historical
Baptist minister and civil rights leader whose campaigns for racial equality forced Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, giving enforcement teeth to the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. The FBI conducted warrantless surveillance of him for years under COINTELPRO — a direct violation of the First and Fourth Amendments.
