Chicago retiree who wanted to keep a handgun in his home for self-defense but was blocked by Chicago's handgun ban. McDonald sued the city, and the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in McDonald v. City of Chicago (2010) that the Second Amendment right recognized in Heller applies to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment. Justice Alito wrote the plurality. McDonald said he wanted to protect himself from the gang activity in his Englewood neighborhood.
