Michigan man whose conviction on robbery charges was based partly on 127 days of cell phone location data obtained by prosecutors without a warrant. The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Carpenter v. United States (2018) that accessing historical cell phone location records requires a warrant under the Fourth Amendment. Chief Justice Roberts wrote that the digital age demands rethinking the third-party doctrine.
