Yassamin Ansari represents Arizona's 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House, serving since January 2025. Born April 7, 1992, in Seattle to Iranian immigrant parents who fled after the Islamic Revolution, she grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona. Ansari launched her career at 22 as an advisor in UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's executive office, where she worked on the climate team that delivered the 2015 Paris Agreement. She later served as deputy policy director for California Governor Jerry Brown's Global Climate Action Summit and returned to the UN as a climate advisor to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, organizing the first-ever UN Youth Climate Summit with 1,000+ young leaders from 140+ countries. Elected to the Phoenix City Council in 2021 as the youngest woman in Phoenix council history and the first Iranian American elected official in Arizona, she served as Vice Mayor of Phoenix in 2023. Ansari won her 2024 Democratic primary by just 39 votes after a recount against Raquel Teran, then won the general election with roughly 71% of the vote. She is the youngest woman in the 119th Congress, the first Iranian American Democrat in Congress, and was elected Democratic freshman class president. She chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus Lowering Costs Task Force.
