Iowa Government Standards

Iowa Academic Standards for Social Studies, adopted January 15, 2026 by the State Board of Education (pursuant to HF 2545, signed May 2024). The 2026 standards replace the previous 2010/2017 framework and emphasize U.S. history, government, founding philosophies and principles, important historical figures, Western civilization, and civics — as directed by HF 2545. Existing grade-band records in this database (IA.SS-Gov.9-12.*) reflect the pre-2026 benchmark numbering and should be reverified against the January 2026 adopted document. High school graduation requires social studies coursework including a government or civics course. Iowa-specific content includes the caucus system and the Meskwaki Nation's land and governance. Note: HF 2510 (passed Iowa House March 2026) would add additional requirements; Senate vote pending as of May 2026.
