New Jersey Student Learning Standards - Standard 6.3: All students will acquire the skills needed to be active, informed citizens who value diversity and promote cultural understanding by working collaboratively to address the challenges that are inherent in living in an interconnected world. Performance expectations focus on students addressing contemporary national and global issues in a solutions-oriented context. Applies to grades K-12 with content organized by disciplinary concepts and strands. Middle school civics: Laura Wooten's Law (P.L. 2021, c. 193, signed July 2021, effective 2022-23) requires all NJ school districts to provide at least two consecutive quarters (or one semester equivalent) of civics instruction integrated within grades 6-8 social studies, addressing constitutional democracy values, functions and limitations of government, and the role of the citizen. Instruction may be distributed across the curriculum rather than as a standalone course. High school graduation requires a minimum two-quarter (or equivalent) civics course addressing values and principles of American constitutional democracy, the function and limitations of government, and the role of a citizen in a democratic society.
