Analyze the historical and philosophical foundations of government, examining how ideas from the Enlightenment, classical republics, and other traditions influenced the development of American constitutional democracy

North Dakota Social Studies Content Standards for Civics and Government (2019, Revised November 30, 2023). Grades 6-12 banded together with some topics overlapping middle/high school and others exclusive to each level, allowing district autonomy in curriculum mapping. Repeated topics taught at developmentally appropriate level. Emphasis on foundation, role, and impact of government; changes in government over time; and continual balance between individual rights and common good. Includes guiding topics column with suggested essential subject matter to help students reach standards. Part of seven-strand framework with six strands for all K-12 students: Civics and Government, Geography, Economics, North Dakota Studies, United States History, and World History.
