BBC faces crisis as top executives resign and Trump demands billions in damages over misleading speech edit

BBC Director-General Tim Davie and news chief Deborah Turness resigned Nov. 9, 2025, after the BBC spliced Trump's Jan. 6 speech to make remarks spoken 50 minutes apart appear as one continuous statement.

Trump filed a $10 billion lawsuit in Miami federal court on Dec. 16, 2025, demanding $5 billion for defamation and $5 billion for unfair trade practices.

The BBC apologized for an "error of judgment" but refused to pay compensation, arguing the court lacks jurisdiction and Trump can't prove "actual malice" under First Amendment law.

ABC News settled a Trump defamation lawsuit for $15 million in Dec. 2024, and CBS settled another for $16 million, showing Trump's strategy works even without winning in court.

The UK government is reviewing the BBC's Royal Charter before it expires in 2027, with Conservative politicians using this scandal to push for ending the license fee that funds editorial independence.
