Omar links attack to Trump rhetoric; attacker told police he was upset about deportation pace

On Jan. 27, 2026, Anthony Kazmierczak, 55, sprayed a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water from a syringe onto Rep. Ilhan OmarRep. Ilhan Omar during her town hall at Urban League headquarters in Minneapolis.

Minneapolis Police arrested Kazmierczak on third-degree assault charges, and the FBI took over the investigation the following day.

FBI Special Agent Derek Fossi, who witnessed the attack, filed the federal criminal complaint stating Kazmierczak 'forcibly assaulted, opposed, impeded, intimidated and interfered' with Omar while she performed her official duties.

According to court documents, Kazmierczak told a close associate several years ago that 'somebody should kill that bitch' in reference to Omar.

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty filed separate state charges of terroristic threats and fifth-degree assault, explicitly stating 'a state-level conviction is not subject to a presidential pardon now or in the future.'

During a phone interview with ABC News Senior Political Correspondent Rachel Scott on Jan. 27, Trump said he had not seen the video but accused Omar of staging the attack, stating 'I think she's a fraud. She probably had herself sprayed, knowing her.'

Omar was calling for the abolition of ICE and the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem when Kazmierczak attacked, and she continued speaking for approximately 30 minutes after the incident.

Court documents reveal the liquid also struck a Minneapolis city councilmember and a state senator who were present at the town hall.
