Attack on key US Gulf ally threatens Gaza ceasefire talks

Date and place: The attack occurred on Sept. 9, 2025, in Doha's Leqtaifiya district.

Casualties: Six people were killed, reported as five Hamas members or staff and one Qatari Internal Security Force officer.

U.S. response: The White House press secretary publicly criticized the strike as 'unilateral' and 'not advancing' U.S. goals, and said U.S. military officials notified the administration shortly before the attack.

Qatar's reaction: Qatar called the strike a violation of its sovereignty and said it would reassess its mediation role; Qatar also reported it received any U.S. warning 'as explosions were being heard.'

Al Udeid: The U.S. Al Udeid Air Base sits roughly 20 miles southwest of Doha and has historically hosted as many as about 10,000 U.S. personnel, though some recent reports cite lower figures near 8,000.
