Move shifts U.S. Space Command amid partisan debate

On Sept. 2, 2025, The President announced he would move U.S. Space Command headquarters to Huntsville, Alabama.

He reversed the Biden administration's Jul. 31, 2023, decision to keep the headquarters in Colorado Springs.

The announcement triggered plans to shift staff, facilities, and missions over several years.

The Trump administration first designated Huntsville as the preferred site in Jan. 2021.

The Biden administration reviewed basing options and on Jul. 31, 2023, kept the headquarters in Colorado Springs.

Officials cited operational readiness, existing infrastructure, and workforce continuity in that decision.

The Government Accountability Office released a report in May 2025 on the relocation costs and risks.

The GAO estimated Huntsville would save about $426 million over 15 years compared with a new Colorado facility.

The GAO also warned the move posed readiness risks and cited gaps in Defense Department documentation.

The report said building new Alabama facilities would take years and could create capability shortfalls during transition.

Colorado Attorney General Phil WeiserPhil Weiser sued the federal government over the relocation.

The state's congressional delegation also publicly opposed the move and warned of national security risks.

Defense officials and watchdogs warned the relocation could spur workforce losses and slow mission capability.

What you can do

1

Legal & oversight

Monitor legal challenges and oversight reviews

Expect lawsuits and oversight reviews within weeks over relocation authority and process. Check federal court dockets for filings. Ask The Government Accountability Office and The Department of Defense inspector general for reviews.

2

Operational readiness

Assess readiness and workforce risks

Analyze service readiness risks and civilian workforce turnover from the move. Request staffing and readiness estimates from The U.S. Space Force and The Army and verify with The GAO.

3

Economic impact

Prepare regional economic impact analyses

Estimate regional job and contract shifts using federal procurement and labor data. Ask state economic agencies in Alabama and Colorado for local revenue and cost estimates and request any existing impact studies.
