Meta, Palantir, and OpenAI execs bypass boot camp for military rank

On June 13, 2025, the Army swore in four tech executives as lieutenant colonels in Detachment 201: Executive Innovation Corps, according to the official Army announcement.

The four new officers are: Shyam Sankar (Palantir CTO), Andrew Bosworth (Meta CTO), Kevin Weil (OpenAI Chief Product Officer), and Bob McGrew (former OpenAI Chief Research Officer, now advisor at Thinking Machines Lab).

Unlike traditional recruits, these executives bypassed boot camp. They went through an express training program covering marksmanship, physical fitness, Army history, and protocols.

The executives will serve about 120 hours per year and must pass annual fitness tests. They work as senior advisors on 'broader conceptual things like talent management' and technology adoption.

The detachment's name references HTTP status code 201, indicating a newly created resource. Col. Dave Butler, Army Chief of Staff spokesman, explained the tech-inspired naming.

Meta and Anduril are teamed together to compete for the Army's next-generation heads-up display. The Army said it will try to ensure no conflict of interest between the executives and their companies.

Col. Butler justified the expedited commissioning: 'We've done this over and over when our nation needed top talent. The difference is we used to do it in wartime now we're doing it ahead of wartime so that we can prepare and deter.'
