179 years of educational independence ends as museums become state mouthpieces

The White House initiated a comprehensive review of the Smithsonian Institution on Aug. 12, 2025 (not Aug. 13).

The review followed Executive Order 14253 signed Mar. 27, 2025, titled "Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History."

The directive affects 8 specific museums (not 19): National Museum of American History, National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of African American History and Culture, National Museum of the American Indian, National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, National Portrait Gallery, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

The review ends 179 years of educational independence (Smithsonian founded 1846, not 175 years).

Vice President J.D. Vance was placed in charge of the review to remove "divisive ideology."

Museums received 120-day deadline to replace "divisive or ideologically driven language with unifying, historically accurate and constructive descriptions."

The Smithsonian received approximately 17 million visits in 2024 (not 45 million).

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is NOT part of the Smithsonianโ€”it is an independent federal institution.

The orders demand removal of displays on slavery's legacy, LGBTQ+ rights, and climate change science that contradict Trump messaging.
