Market forces already shifted imports 73%, proposal appears aimed at political messaging

President Donald TrumpDonald Trump posted on social media on Oct. 14, 2025 that he was considering ending business ties with China 'having to do with Cooking Oil.'

China exported a record 1.27 million metric tons of UCO to the U.S. in 2024, valued at about $1.1 billion, per USDA export data.

U.S. imports of Chinese UCO fell 65% in Jan.–Aug. 2025 to 290,690 metric tons, or about $286.7 million, compared with 2024 totals.

Traders and analysts told reporters that flows had already shifted, so new U.S. restrictions would likely be more symbolic than economically disruptive.

1

understanding

Clarify numeric comparisons in reporting

State whether a percentage compares year-to-date 2025 to the same period in 2024, or to full-year 2024, to avoid misleading readers.

2

civic action

Ask industry groups for impact estimates

Request specific feedstock volume and price impact estimates from major biodiesel refiners and trade associations for Jan.–Aug. 2025.
