Major Non-NATO Ally (MNNA) is a designation established under 22 U.S.C. 2321k that gives select foreign countries access to benefits available to NATO members without formal alliance obligations. Benefits include priority delivery of defense equipment, eligibility to purchase advanced weapons under Foreign Military Sales, participation in joint research and development, and the right to host U.S. war reserve stockpiles. Israel was designated an MNNA in 1987 under the Reagan administration. The designation does not trigger Article 5-style collective defense obligations.
