Senate averts government shutdown hours before deadline as House Freedom Caucus blocked bills

The U.S. government nearly shuts down as the September 30 fiscal year deadline approaches with no funding deal in place. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy faces a rebellion from the Freedom Caucus that blocks every spending bill he brings to the floor. Hours before midnight, the Senate passes a 45-day continuing resolution that McCarthy brings to the House floor without conservative add-ons. The bill passes 335-91 with mostly Democratic votes. The episode leads directly to McCarthy's ouster days later. The federal government faces the threat of shutdown again in November, December, and into 2024 under new Speaker Mike Johnson.
