Trump executive order demands race-based admissions data from colleges

President Trump signed an executive order in August 2025 directing the Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics to demand that public colleges in all 50 states submit seven years of detailed race- and gender-disaggregated admissions data within 120 days. The administration said the data was needed to identify unconstitutional race-conscious admissions practices following the 2023 Supreme Court ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard. Critics argued the rushed timeline violated the Administrative Procedure Act.
