Supreme Court rules in Citizens United that corporations can spend unlimited money in elections

Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote the 5-4 majority opinion in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, holding that the government may not restrict independent political expenditures by corporations, associations, or labor unions. The ruling struck down Section 203 of McCain-Feingold, which had banned corporate-funded electioneering communications near elections. Justice John Paul Stevens filed a 90-page dissent warning the decision would undermine the integrity of elected institutions across the Nation, joined by Justices Breyer, Ginsburg, and Sotomayor.
