Senate Democrats request GAO investigation into Trump education grant impoundments

Senators Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Patty Murray, and Tammy Baldwin formally requested that the Government Accountability Office investigate the Trump administration's withholding of education grants and its interagency transfer of grant programs from the Department of Education to agencies without education expertise. House Budget Committee Ranking Member Brendan Boyle and Senator Jeff Merkley separately asked the GAO to investigate the broader pattern of funding freezes across federal agencies for potential violations of the Impoundment Control Act. The GAO had already opened 46 impoundment investigations across the administration and had previously concluded Trump illegally impounded funds on at least four separate occasions in 2026.
