Jan. 6 Committee Votes 9-0 to Refer Criminal Charges Against Trump to DOJ
The House Select Committee voted unanimously 9-0 to refer former President Donald Trump to the Department of Justice on four criminal counts: obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to make false statements, and assisting or aiding an insurrection. It was the first time in U.S. history a congressional committee referred a former president for criminal prosecution. Committee Chair Bennie Thompson and Vice Chair Liz Cheney both called the referral a constitutional obligation. The referrals were advisory only and carried no legal force, but they laid out the evidentiary case prosecutors would later use.
