Supreme Court lets Trump proceed with Education Department layoffs

The U.S. Supreme Court issued an unsigned order in McMahon v. New York staying lower-court injunctions and allowing the Trump administration to continue dismantling the Department of Education while litigation proceeds. Justice Sonia Sotomayor dissented, joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson, writing that the order let the executive branch unilaterally undo a department Congress created. The ruling applied to the consolidated state and AFT cases.
