SCOTUS rules 5-4 in Obergefell v. Hodges same-sex couples have constitutional right to marry
The Supreme Court rules 5-4 in Obergefell v. Hodges that the Fourteenth Amendment requires all states to license and recognize same-sex marriages. Justice Anthony Kennedy writes the majority opinion, finding both due process and equal protection grounds for the right. Chief Justice John Roberts, along with Justices Scalia, Thomas, and Alito, dissent. The ruling immediately ends same-sex marriage bans in 14 states and makes the U.S. the 21st country to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. The White House is lit in rainbow colors that night. Obama calls it a "victory for America."
