Stephen Ira Cohen, known as Steve Cohen, has represented Tennessee's 9th Congressional District (Memphis) since January 2007. Born May 24, 1949, in Memphis, he earned a B.A. from Vanderbilt University (1971) and a J.D. from the University of Memphis (1973). Before Congress, Cohen served as a Memphis Police Department attorney (1975-1978), Shelby County Commissioner (1978-1980), and Tennessee State Senator for 24 years (1982-2006). Known as the "Father of the Tennessee Lottery," Cohen fought for nearly two decades to create the Tennessee Education Lottery, which has provided over $6.5 billion in scholarships since 2004. He is Tennessee's first Jewish congressman. In the 119th Congress, Cohen serves on the Judiciary Committee, the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee (Ranking Member of the Aviation Subcommittee), and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
