South Dakota Government and Civics Standards
South Dakota Social Studies Standards (adopted April 17, 2023) for 9th-12th Grade United States Government/American Civics. Most controversial adoption in recent history with nearly 2 years of process, 1,300+ public comments, hours of testimony across four hearings, and 5-2 Board vote. Structure includes history, geography, civics, and economics at every grade level. American history and/or civics studied five times throughout K-12 education; world history studied four times. Integration of state, tribal, and reservation history into American History. Optional one-semester elective on South Dakota and Native American History and Civics. Standalone high school civics course provides opportunity to consider principles and functioning of American republic in detail, with basic civics instruction also integrated into all American history classes. Implementation scheduled Fall 2025 following June 2024 Civics and History Summit (~400 educators).
