Trump posts war imagery then backtracks as ICE enters Chicago

President Trump posted the AI-derived 'Chipocalypse Now' image on Truth Social on Sept. 6, 2025. Reports quote the caption 'I love the smell of deportations in the morning. Chicago about to find out why it's called the Department of WAR.'.

On Sept. 2, 2025 U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer ruled that the Jun. federalization and deployment of troops to Los Angeles violated limits on domestic military law enforcement, finding the administration used military personnel in roles that contravened the Posse Comitatus Act. The court issued injunctive relief while some aspects were stayed on appeal.

News outlets report the White House has discussed sending ICE agents and as many as a few hundred federal immigration officers to Chicago, while Illinois leaders pledge legal challenges and political resistance. That movement is contested and in flux.

The administration issued an executive order designating 'Department of War' as an alternate or secondary title for the Department of Defense. Legal commentators and news outlets note that a permanent statutory name change would need congressional action.

Claims about specific cost figures, budget multipliers, or exact troop-price formulas (for example '3,000 troops cost $1.6 million daily' or 'a $75 billion ICE expansion triples the agency's budget to $30 billion') lack reliable sourcing and require official budget documents to verify. Those numeric claims should be treated as unverified.
